Tips for Ladder Safety
It is important that you know how to use a ladder safely. Now, a ladder is a pretty simple tool, but even the simplest of tools can cause safety concerns when they aren't used properly. Most ladder accidents happen as a result of improper use or improper ladder selection for the job at hand (big bonus of the Little Giant Ladders as they can be altered to fit whatever use you need them for!) and not manufacturer defects.
So, below, check out some basic tips to keep yourself safe when using a ladder at work or at home:
1. Don't move the ladder with anything on top of it. Ask any painter who's been whacked in the head by a paint can they left on top while moving a ladder how much pain to the head doing this can cause.
2. Don't reach for the stars. Sometimes moving a ladder numerous times can be a pain, but stretching to reach something can cause you, or the ladder, to become unbalanced and possibly a nasty spill.
3. Use ladders with non skid spurs (the bottoms of the legs) - this will help the ladder stay in place and not slide or slip on smoother surfaces such as tile.
4. The general rule of thumb is not to stand on the ladders top three rungs - if the ladder is to short, get a taller one (or extend it to the right height if you have a Little Giant Ladder!).
5. If your ladder is damaged, especially on one of the side rails, you may want to consider a new ladder for optimal safety.
6. The bottom of the ladder should be spaced 1 foot away from the target for every four feet tall that the ladder stands. These are the official safety recommendations for ladder users.
7. If you're using the ladder to climb onto the roof to hand holiday lights or any other reason, be sure the ladder extends 3 feet past the top of the part you plan to climb onto.
8. Always use a step ladder how it is meant to be used - unfolded! Don't use a step ladder in the folded position - it's not safe!
9. Metal or even wood ladders (when they're wet) can conduct electricity, so be careful of potential shock hazards - remember, I love fiberglass because it doesn't conduct electricity.
10. Do not tie together or attach any two ladders to reach higher spaces unless they are specifically designed for this purpose!
11. Never climb or descend a ladder without using at least one hand to hold the side rail on your way up or down.
12. Never, ever use the top step of a ladder to stand on for any reason. Ladders are not designed to do this.
13. Never come down a ladder with your back facing it - always turn and step down while facing the ladder (with one hand on the rail).
Stay safe while using your ladder - your family will thank you for it.
